Electronic music pioneers Daft Punk are generating massive digital buzz for their forthcoming single ‘Get Lucky’. Their teaser video which appeared on Saturday Night Live and at Coachella has been remixed hundreds of times.
It seems every time a new section of the song is released aspiring DJs remix it and produce a full-length track. The most recent version [update: it has just been pulled] is from a SoundCloud user from Istanbul delivering the following “original radio edit” of the song that features two different verses, a legit chorus and a vintage DP robot vocalization.
The whole thing reminds me of one of the themes from the awesome doco Press Pause Play. We live in a world where anyone can DJ. The tools are accessible, the audience is within reach. I had never really used SoundCloud that much until the Get Lucky remixes started popping up.
Is there not an opportunity for more artists to seed their new work online and encourage fans to tailor, remix and sample their work? Yes artists such as Ben Folds, DJ Shadow and Radiohead have starting to do this already but what if fans could help craft the final work? Rather than the remixing occurring in retrospect what if it happened in pre-production? Could we crowd source music production? Would it be any good and who would own it?
Anyhow, I can’t wait for Random Access Memories to drop.
